Our design process

Eight steps, no mystery. The process is built so that designing your home stays the fun part.

  1. Initial meeting at client’s home to review project and scope.

  2. EMD sends Design Agreement to client detailing which pieces will be sourced by room, as well as estimated design hours per room. Client finalizes and signs.

  3. Client conducts guided inspiration gathering to share aesthetic.

  4. Meeting at the EMD studio to present EMD’s suggested interior design concepts, complete with samples for touching and feeling.

  5. Furnishing / décor is agreed upon and purchased.

  6. EMD tracks orders and inspects upon arrival at our warehouse.

  7. Install day! EMD team manages full room install and accessorizes the space. Clients can choose which accessories to keep.

  8. Happy clients enjoying new fresh, curated space!

Before we even start sourcing, the room is measured - down to a quarter of an inch - to make sure each piece we will source will work in the space and provide optimal experience and aesthetic based on our client's goals.

Full Service Interior Design at Ellie Mroz Design is the turn-key version: we thoughtfully select and install every piece—sofas, lighting, art, the accessories that finish a shelf—until the home is genuinely, completely done. Measuring, sourcing, layouts, custom pieces and white-glove installation are all ours to carry, in our signature classic-meets-fresh style, shaped around the way you actually live. We take on clients from 1 room to full homes.

What is actually included in full service interior design?

Every part of the project — from collecting your inspiration at the start through to the last round of accessorizing. We select the furniture, finishes, colors, lighting, artwork and window treatments. Our team coordinates the orders and oversees the installation, including the wallpaper, carpet and window installations. The aim is a process that runs smoothly and is genuinely enjoyable for you.

How does a full service design project get started?

It begins in your home: an initial consultation to talk through your goals and the scope of the project. After that, we email a working design agreement laying out the work and the estimated hours. Once you approve it, we walk you through gathering inspiration, then present design concepts at our studio.

Can EMD furnish a newly built home from scratch?

Yes. Chatham Charm began as a brand-new construction home with no furnishings. EMD planned and furnished the rooms as part of a whole-home interior design project, coordinating furniture layouts, selections and finishing layers. We can also begin with one complete room.

Do clients get a say in choosing the furnishings?

Very much so. Every project opens with gathering client inspiration (in an easy, guided fashion), so the sourcing is built on the client’s aesthetic from day one. We encourage client participation at the presentation, which is an interactive session with samples in hand and 3-8 options presented per item sourced. On install day, you choose which accessories to keep. It is an approach that creates a space genuinely reflecting your style, curated by our design team.

How long does a typical project take?

About 12 to 20 weeks, from the initial meeting to the final installation — where it lands depends on scope, client availability, product lead times and how much is custom.

  • Phase 1: Discovery & Scope (Weeks 1-2)

    • In-Home Consultation: Our designers meet you at the house to define goals and project scope.

    • Onboarding: We finalize the agreement outlining the specific scope of work by room, and receive the project retainer.

  • Phase 2: Inspiration & Creative Alignment (Weeks 2-3)

    • Pinterest Collaboration: You’ll spend 1–2 weeks sharing inspiration room by room through our formal (and genuinely painless) digital process, so we understand your aesthetic goals.

  • Phase 3: Design Development (Weeks 4-5)

    • The Deep Dive: Our team measures the site, creates floor plans, develops concepts, selects 3-8 options per item to be sourced and procures physical samples for your review.

  • Phase 4: Presentation & Proposal (Week 6)

    • Studio Presentation: Join us at our Westfield, NJ studio for an interactive session — make your selections, and touch and feel every curated sample.

    • Pricing: A detailed proposal with per-item pricing follows within a week of your final selections.

  • Phase 5: Procurement & Installation (Weeks 6-12+)

    • Ordering: Once payment is received, we move into the purchasing phase.

    • Lead Times: Installation generally happens about 6-8 weeks out for in-stock items, while custom pieces typically require 12+ weeks.

Total Project Estimate: From the initial meeting to the final install, the typical journey for a full-scale furnishings project is around 12 to 20 weeks. This varies based on client/designer availability and manufacturer timelines.

Which areas do you serve?

Currently, we offer full service design and furnishings in Westfield, Summit, Short Hills, Millburn, Scotch Plains, Madison and Cranford. Our team works closely with clients in these towns, which is how the design stays personal and thoughtful. There are occasional exceptions for large projects.

What is the difference between full-service interior design and styling?

Full-service interior design typically covers space planning, furniture selection, custom pieces, lighting, rugs, window treatments, art, accessories, ordering, tracking, and installation. Styling is the narrower job: finishing touches, accessories, and refreshing a space that is already furnished.

Do you help with furniture purchasing and installation?

Yes. EMD sources the furnishings and décor, coordinates the purchasing, tracks every order, inspects each item on arrival, and manages the final installation.

Can you design around pieces we already own and love?

Yes, when appropriate. The design process can build around the existing pieces that mean something, while introducing new furnishings, colors, textures, lighting, art, and accessories around them to create a more cohesive finished space.

For renovations and new homes, MRCxEMD brings construction and interior design coordination into one conversation. Construction consulting runs through that collaboration, so it is available when MRC is building. Furnishings are not tied to it — we can furnish your home whoever is building, or when there is no construction at all.

This is a Jersey studio, through and through. For now, our services are limited to Westfield, Summit, Short Hills, Chatham, Madison, Millburn, Scotch Plains, Cranford, Mountainside and surrounding towns.
