Millburn is a suburban township in the southwest corner of Essex County, New Jersey. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township’s population is 20,149. Millburn Township is a full-service community where most residents live in single family homes. Millburn is comprised of the historic Wyoming district, and South Mountain and Millburn Center areas.
History
Millburn began as a colonial settlement with agricultural origins, followed by a 19th century mill/factory economy and eventually became a Victorian residential community. There are many examples of this history still present in the township, from the Hessian House, the Cora Hartshorn Arboretum, the Paper Mill Playhouse, and the many historic, classic homes to our 2 historic districts, Short Hills Park and Wyoming.
Millburn Township was once part of Elizabethtown and Newark settlements in New Jersey, created by a grant from Charles II to his brother James in 1664. In 1793, Springfield Township was created and it included Millburn. In 1857, Springfield became part of the new Union County and Millburn became a separate township within Essex County.
Schools
Millburn Township has a renown school system. New Jersey Magazine has ranked the Millburn Township school system among the top 3 school districts in the state. In addition, Township schools also receive a national ranking as having one of the most academically challenging high schools in the country.
The Millburn Township School District has five elementary schools, a middle school and Millburn High School, which was judged in 2008 and 2010 to be the number one public high school in the state by New Jersey Monthly magazine. A high percentage of Millburn graduates are accepted to top colleges and universities, according to the state Department of Education.
Culture, Activities & Recreation
The Township offers a wide variety of recreation programs, including a community pool and a par 3 golf course. In addition, Millburn Township has many high-quality restaurants, a movie theater, the Hilton Short Hills, and a wide variety of cultural events, including the renowned Paper Mill Playhouse and the Cora Hartshorn Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary.
Downtown/Retail
Millburn Township is unique in that it offers upscale, high-end, 5th avenue shopping along with quaint small town shopping of a traditional downtown.
Millburn’s main downtown takes up a few blocks right next to the train station and includes Taylor Park, the library, a playground, several great restaurants, some of the best coffee shops and bakeries in the area, the Paper Mill Playhouse, clothing and gift boutiques, a movie theater, hiking trails within walking distance, and the middle school and high school on the very near outskirts.
The Mall at Short Hills, located on the western side of the Township, is a high-end regional shopping center.
Commute to New York City
With one train station each, Millburn and Short Hills are two of the best commuting towns in NJ. The Township is easy to reach via the midtown direct line of New Jersey Transit, the Garden State Parkway, New Jersey Turnpike, and is also convenient to Routes 24 and 78.
Both train stations offer direct trains to New York Penn Station, some as fast as 39 minutes but generally around 45. Multiple stations means many more train and parking opportunities. Each station has its own commuter lot and many residential neighborhoods, especially in Millburn, are within walking distance to the station. It’s situated right alongside Routes 78, 24, the Garden State Parkway, and the New Jersey Turnpike for easy driving access in all directions.
Millburn-Short Hills is approximately 21 miles due west of midtown Manhattan, out the I-78 corridor.
The commute to and from New York is 40 minutes by car or an easy 35-minute train ride from Penn Station or Wall Street.
The commute from Short Hills and Millburn to NYC is an easy 35-minute train ride on New Jersey Transit. The Midtown Direct trains bring commuters straight into NYC’s Penn Station and the Hoboken Line brings commuters to Hoboken, where Ferries and Path trains easily connect the line to lower Manhattan. There are two train stations in town, one in the heart of Short Hills and the other right in downtown Millburn; both are an easy walk from most neighborhoods.
Millburn is also a quick 15 minutes away from Newark Liberty International Airport.
