Mountainside is a borough in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The borough is located on a ridge in northern-central New Jersey, within the Raritan Valley and Rahway Valley regions in the New York metropolitan area. With a modest downtown and several residential streets stretching up the southern slopes of the Watchung Reservation hills, this town of 6,685 residents can feel like a sudden detour into Vermont after you have left the busier neighboring towns of Westfield, Summit and Scotch Plains.
Mountainside students can also attend one of the Union County vocational/technical schools, specializing in the performing arts, information technology and health sciences.

Settled by immigrants from Europe in 1720, Westfield was once a popular trail for the Lenni-Lenape Indians whose heritage remains in the names of many existing streets and parks and residential areas such as Mindowaskin Park, Tamaques Park, Lenape Park, and the Indian Forest residential section.
